2020 Green River Marathon

Green River Marathon is a “Social Distancing Run”.

In other words, we want to make it very clear to our participants that it is not just business as usual. We want a run that is safe as can be, and in compliance with Washington State Mandates. We will be insisting on social distancing while the run takes place.

Green River Marathon Update (5/31/20)

"Keep It Moving" is the theme for this year's race.

No congregating at the start or finish area.

Runners will start ASAP upon arriving.

Please have your donations ready to turn in or prepaid via Zelle.

Runners are encouraged to leave shortly after they finish their race.

With everyone's cooperation, everything will turn out great.

Please reread the (5/6/20) update.

Green River Marathon Update (5/6/20)

  1. Green River Marathon is NOT a Boston Qualifying Race for 2020.
  2. Green River Marathon course has been changed.
  3. Green River Marathon course will start at same location and run 6.55 miles south and back.
  4. Algona/3rd St and Interurban Trail will be marked as the turn around. No marking at the start
  5. Green River Marathon is including a Half Marathon option along with the Full Marathon.
  6. Green River Marathon will start out as a Virtual Race (Available now 5/6/20).
  7. Green River Marathon will be an Actual Race on 6/6/20.
  8. I will be at the start of the race on June 6, 2020.  Just after 5:00 AM.
  9. Runners will start as soon as they arrive. Don’t start before I get there.
  10. Runners should start between 5:10 AM and 8:30 AM on 6/6/20.
  11. Race will be over at 1:45 PM on 6/6/20.
  12. My job will be check in, take donations, parking lot security, and finish line misc.
  13. I will mail the volunteers to tell them our plans and to say they are not needed.
  14. Volunteers/crews will be welcome just to tour the course if they want to.
  15. Runners are welcome to do this as a virtual race and as an actual race. Only 1 donation req.
  16. Not sure how long Virtual Race will last – Up to 6/6/20 and maybe longer?
  17. Any course can be used for the Virtual Race (not just our Green River Marathon course).
  18. Face Masks are required before and after running the race.
  19. Social Distancing must be observed at all times (6 feet separation).
  20. Your results will be posted when your $20.00 donation to Northwest Harvest is received.
  21. Please use Zelle to send your donation to: barrick@greenrivermarathon.com
  22. Cash/check will be accepted on 6/6/20. Prefer to use Zelle. Sanitary precautions  encouraged
  23. A check or cash can be sent to my home address (prefer not to use this method – last resort)
  24. NO porta potty at the start of the race (eliminating germs).
  25. NO bibs used. This would make it look more like a larger gathering.
  26. NO chip timing. Hand timing and self – reporting of times.
  27. NO Aid Stations. Runners must carry their own supplies. (Eliminating germs).
  28. NO medals given out for this race (eliminating germs).
  29. Medals are where I have the most struggles at this time. Things may change?
  30. Not sure of the turnouts - so I will be donating the cost of the medals to Northwest Harvest.
  31. After getting this matched twice, this will guarantee Northwest Harvest at least $2500.00.
  32. The need for donations to Northwest Harvest is greater than it has ever been right now. Donations are urgently needed. Your donations will be matched and matched again so that a donation of $20.00 will become $80.00. Also, if racers care to donate more than the initial $20.00, it will be sincerely welcomed.
  33. More updates coming. Please be patient – things may and probably will change.

Thank you

Steve Barrick

The Green River Marathon is a Marathon/Relay/Fun Run put on for FREE! That's right, no cost at all. It is put on entirely by an all volunteer crew and donations by the event's originators and organizers. In 2020 - Medals will be given FREE of charge to ALL Volunteers PLUS Runners who Donate $20.00 to Northwest Harvest. Donations are typically given on Day Of Race. We will be using Chip Timing this year (2020). Donations are appreciated and keep this run going. Donations are used to help pay for event costs, ie supplies, improvements and certifications. Most of the funds are donated to Northwest Harvest. Donations are typically given on Day Of Race.

A fun Seattle-area run in early June (first Saturday) is the Green River Marathon/Relay. This year will be the 24TH annual event. Marathon Maniac, Eastside Runners and Interurban Running Club member Steve Barrick and Marathon Maniac Jim Anderson put on this run with the help of many volunteers. It begins at the intersection of the Green River trail and the Interurban trail in South Kent.

GPS Starting Location: S. 259th and 74th Avenue S. Kent WA 98032 (Foster Park):

GPS Finishing Location: 2666 Alki Avenue SW Seattle, WA 98116 (Spud's Fish and Chips):

The run is very flat with two short hills late in the run. The last few miles have views of Seattle and Puget Sound towards the Olympics. The finish is in front of Spud's Fish and Chips at Alki.

If you don't want to run the entire 26.2 miles, then get together some friends and make it a relay with any number of participants. Everyone is encouraged to participate by running as far as they like. In past years we have had runners running as little as 2.5 miles and as much as 22.5 miles. There are no formal rules or divisions, the run is just for fun and to stay in shape. About 25% of the participants are on relays. They help cheer the others along and pass out water, gatorade and GU (?) which is provided free. Many of the parks have restrooms along the way. Support is limited, so those with special nutritional and fluid needs are encouraged to make their own arrangements.

This is a low key run amongst friends with no entry fee. In 2020 - Medals will be given FREE of charge to ALL Volunteers PLUS Runners who Donate $20.00 to Northwest Harvest. Donations are typically given on Day Of Race. We will be using Chip Timing this year (2020). There are no awards, but most of the runners treat themselves to a lunch at Spuds at the finish.

Very limited return transportation will be provided to those that request it in advance. Runners are encouraged to meet at the finish at 6:45 AM to car pool back to the start. Runners can also choose to meet at the start and hope for a ride back.

For more details on this run and relay along with return transportation options see email links below. If you are planning on running in the Green River Marathon please let the Race Director Barrick know by email. The race is free but we need to know how many people will need return transportation and how many supplies to purchase for the aid stations. Solo marathon runners need to email: First and last name, City and State, DOB, age on June 6th 2020, sex, best marathon time, and predicted marathon time while relay teams need to email their team name and participant names, this is mainly for the race results page.

We will NOT have the Pasta Party in 2020

It is not our intent for anyone to get hurt while running the Green River Marathon.
